Curriculum Intent

At Manor Academy, our Personal Social Development (PSHE/SRE) curriculum is designed to ensure that all learners, regardless of need, develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to lead safe, healthy, and fulfilled lives and to become confident, active participants in modern Britain.

Our curriculum is coherent, progressive and responsive to pupil need. It is carefully sequenced to build on prior learning and revisits key themes at increasing levels of complexity. As an SEN 11–19 provision, content is delivered in an accessible and developmentally appropriate way to ensure all pupils can succeed.

The curriculum is fully aligned with statutory requirements, including the DfE Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) guidance (2026). It ensures pupils receive a broad and balanced education while meeting safeguarding and legal expectations.

We aim to develop respectful relationships, support emotional regulation through the Zones of Regulation, equip pupils to recognise risk and harm, and promote personal development, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood. We actively promote British Values including democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance.

Curriculum Implementation

Our PSD curriculum is delivered through a carefully structured and progressive programme across Key Stages 3 and 4. It is coherent across year groups and ensures progression in knowledge, understanding and skills. Content is progressive, responsive to pupil need, and aligned with statutory expectations. Teaching is adapted using scaffolding, repetition, visual supports and real-life contexts. The Zones of Regulation is embedded throughout to support emotional literacy and self-regulation. There is a strong focus on preparation for adulthood, including independence, organisation, relationships, personal safety and future planning. The curriculum is enhanced through workshops, real-life learning and opportunities for student voice.

Curriculum Impact

The impact of our curriculum is that pupils become confident, respectful and increasingly independent individuals prepared for adult life. Through a coherent and progressive curriculum, pupils develop the ability to manage relationships, regulate emotions and make informed decisions. The curriculum promotes pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood. Pupils leave with the skills needed for employment, independent living and participation in the community. Where appropriate, pupils achieve accredited qualifications (OCR life and Living Entry Level 1-3 units and BTEC Vocational Units paired with their option choices)

Equal Opportunities and Inclusion

We provide an inclusive curriculum that meets the needs of all learners. Teaching is adapted to ensure accessibility and reflects diverse identities and experiences. We promote equality, challenge discrimination and ensure all pupils feel safe, valued and included.
